NERC Submits GMD Research Work Plan

On May 30, 2017, in Docket No. RM15-11-001, NERC submitted a preliminary work plan to conduct research on topics related to geomagnetic disturbances (GMDs) and their impacts on the reliability of the Bulk-Power System. NERC was required to submit this work plan pursuant to Order No. 830, which approved Reliability Standard TPL-007-1 but required NERC to submit a work plan within six months of the effective date of the Final Rule. FERC required this plan to describe how NERC would conduct research on GMD-related topics specified by the Commission and any additional topics selected in NERC’s discretion. The report details nine specific tasks related to GMD-research areas.
