Law360 Covers Arrival of Dan Martin to Litigation Practice

Dan Martin, a partner in the firm’s White-Collar Defense & Investigations Practice, interviewed with Law360 about his decision to join Balch & Bingham’s Birmingham office, strengthening the firm’s capabilities to serve clients facing complex, high-stakes disputes.

In the article published January 14, 2025, Dan said joining Balch and practicing out of its Birmingham headquarters allows him to better serve current clients while also providing an opportunity to grow his practice.

"The firm's reputation and talent representing clients in highly-regulated fields such as healthcare, energy and regulatory work, aligns perfectly with my experience and goals," Law360 quoted Dan as saying.

Dan’s white-collar criminal defense practice focuses on bet-the-company and bet-your-liberty cases for individuals and businesses facing DOJ investigations or prosecutions, including matters involving the False Claims Act and Anti-Kickback Statute. He regularly handles whistleblower cases, government investigations and enforcement actions,  conducts internal investigations, and advises clients on complex decisions like self-reporting.

"These individuals are often facing their first serious encounter with government scrutiny, where the stakes involve not just financial or reputational damage but potentially their freedom," Law360 quoted Dan. “The resources and talent here will allow me to provide even greater value to clients, whether navigating complex litigation, bet-the-company or bet-your-liberty cases, government enforcement actions, or proactively implementing compliance measures.”

Dan’s practice also focuses on complex commercial and employment litigation, representing clients ranging from individuals to Fortune 500 companies, across industries such as healthcare, energy, banking, construction, and manufacturing.

Law360 described two of Dan’s recent cases, writing, “a suit involving a former NASA entrepreneur hit with a $10 million trade secrets claim, and a second involving a doctor targeted by the DOJ's Appalachian Region Prescription Opioid Strike Force who was hit with 17 charges carrying a potential life sentence. In the first case, his client successfully avoided having to pay damages, while the second saw all but one charge successfully dismissed.”

Dan added that in the second case, on the sole remaining claim the government ultimately capitulated and agreed to not seek any jail time.

"Dan's breadth of experience and track record of success in both white-collar defense and commercial litigation adds great value to our team," Law360 quoted Allen Estes, Chair of Balch’s Litigation Practice. “He's a proven advocate who will be an asset to our clients navigating highly challenging and consequential disputes. We're happy to welcome him to Balch.”
